Who I Am

My Education: I hold a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA, and I am a graduate of the PACAC Institute for College Counseling. I am certified as a secondary school teacher by the State of New York. I graduated magna cum laude from New York University, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and received a J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law where I graduated at the top of my class.

My Experience: My career-oriented focus as an independent educational consultant (IEC) draws on my experience in the business world, as well as my educational background. As an award-winning editor and writer specializing in higher education and secondary school, I have gained invaluable insight into families, secondary school and higher education. Thanks to my law background, I am an effective advisor to and advocate for my students. My law, writing and editing skills give students an advantage in brainstorming, crafting and polishing essays that sing and in creating powerful, professional resumes that become the foundations for their careers.

My Media: I have been featured in the cover story, V.I.P., in the January 6, 2008 edition of The New York Times Special Supplement, Education Life; in the September 2010 Back-to-School issue of Westchester Magazine (Getting That Big Fat Envelope); in the Great Schools Parent's Guide to K-12 Success (Should My Teen Take Four Years of a Foreign Language?); and in Allbusiness.com (Stress, College Admissions and Your Employees).

I am a contributor to Get into College (Atlanta, Georgia: Hundreds of Heads Books, 2009) and How to Survive Getting Into College (Atlanta, Georgia: Hundreds of Heads Books, 2006), and I share tips on the college process in the Counselor's Corner of the Get into College online newsletter: the college search, surfing college websites, visiting colleges, colleges visiting you, organizing applications, summer activities, financial aid, meeting deadlines, and creating a senior year checklist.

I have written about college for the RJ Insider's Guide to College Life and for the newsletter of CACLD, the Connecticut Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities. I was the College Insider columnist in Westchester County, N.Y. You can read a number of those columns in the Articles section of this website.

My Presentations: I have moderated programs and workshops with college deans from across the United States. Programs for college-bound teens and parents include College Ahead! in Greenwich, Connecticut, and the annual Inside the Admissions Office in Scarsdale, New York, as well as the workshop for educational consultants, Where Credit is Due: How to Decipher the High School Transcript, at the Fall 2008 IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) conference in Baltimore, Maryland. In September of 2010, I moderated a workshop on International Admissions at the annual conference of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), an organization of more than 11,000 professionals who assist students as they make choices about pursuing postsecondary education. I have also given workshops on college interviews and resume writing for the YWCA GEMS (Girls Empowered through Meaningful Support) High School program in White Plains, N.Y.

My programs have featured panelists from American University, Barnard College, Bucknell University, Butler University, Columbia University, Dickinson College, Indiana University, Lafayette College, Lawrence University, Muhlenberg College, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), SUNY New Paltz, Syracuse University, the University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, University of Rochester, University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt University. Bringing together the decision-makers in college admissions to talk with students and parents and my colleagues is among my greatest pleasures.

My Affiliations: I am a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC), the Westchester/Putnam/Rockland Counseling Association (WPRCA) and the American Association of University Women.

My Awards:

Medill Editorial Awards, Parenting Publications of America
Gold, 1997; Silver, 1998
Clarion Journalism Awards, Women In Communications, Westchester
Two Gold, Silver, 1993

Parents' Most Frequently Asked Questions <

How personal are your services?
Very. I spend a lot of one-on-one time with students through meetings, telephone conversations, faxes, email and even Skype and iChat. I believe that working with one consultant throughout the entire college search and application process allows both student and consultant to know each other well -- and that relationship leads to stronger applications with more compelling and well-developed essay ideas and writing. I fit my services and schedule to the needs of each student and family. And I make sure that parents are informed every step of the way. I work with students but for parents.

Do you work with students who want to apply to the most selective colleges, including the Ivy League schools?
Absolutely. My students attend Ivy League colleges as well as many other fine institutions. Every student is special, and I always fit my services to each individual's interests and background, both academic and extra-curricular.

What’s the most important thing my high school student can do
right now?
Study. Although it’s great to visit schools during junior year where possible, grades take precedence. A GPA can’t be redone; a college visit can.

Do you help students with interviews?
Yes. I teach interviewing skills and etiquette.

What about standardized tests?
I can advise your student about what tests to take and when to take them.

Do you help us keep all of this organized?
Of course. I make sure students keep track of application deadlines, essays that have to be written, interview and audition dates, NCAA deadlines, etc.

How do we know what to do when visiting colleges and universities?
I will make recommendations as to which schools to visit and how to optimize the experience.

Do you visit colleges and universities?
Yes. I visit about 50 to 60 schools each year, mostly throughout the United States but in other countries as well. I've toured hundreds of campuses, some more than once.

Where have your students been accepted?
A number of my students' recent acceptances include: Yale University, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, M.I.T., New York University, Duke University, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, Washington University in St. Louis, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, Tufts University, Emory University, Swarthmore College, Haverford College, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, Wesleyan University, Carleton College, Hamilton College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Pitzer College, Brandeis University, Bucknell University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, George Washington University, Syracuse University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Franklin & Marshall College, Wake Forest University, University of Rochester, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Muhlenberg College, Binghamton University, University of Miami, Grinnell College, Savannah College of Art & Design, Mount Holyoke College, Dickinson College, Villanova University, School of Visual Arts, Quinnipiac University, Allegheny College, St. Joseph's University, American University, Boston College, University of Richmond, Elon University, Oberlin College, the University of Connecticut and others.

INSIDE THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE

Fall 2011 - Scarsdale, N.Y.
